The fight against fascism, then & now: 80 years after the defeat of Nazism.Date and TimesSunday 18 May 2025

About this EventMay 9 marks 80 years since the Soviet-led victory over Nazi Germany and the end of the Second World War in Europe. This was one of the most significant events in modern history, and a turning point in the global struggle against fascism.
Although the Soviet Union undisputably played the major role in this victory; although it was the Red Army that liberated Auschwitz; although the Soviets suffered an estimated 27 million casualties in the course of this epic struggle, Western historians and politicians have consistently attempted to downplay the Soviet role. Meanwhile today the European Union is warning its members not to participate in Moscow’s anniversary celebrations, instructing them instead to “show solidarity with Ukraine”. The irony of using the anniversary of the victory over fascism in order to promote NATO’s proxy war on Russia - on the front line of which are openly fascist and white supremacist militia - beggars belief.
At this webinar, we will discuss the significance of the Soviet victory over fascism and the lessons we can learn from it, at a time when fascism increasingly poses a threat in various parts of the world, when “liberal democracy” has lost much of its legitimacy, and when the leaders of the self-styled “free world” are actively supporting Israel’s fascistic, genocidal campaign against the Palestinian people.
